How to Talk to Your Teen about Vaping

If you take a quick glance around, you will see numerous teen vaping ads. Every time your teenager gets a new phone, there are new ads for them to see. They are all-over social media. Even gas stations are changing their flavors to more teen-friendly ones. Vaping has become increasingly popular among teens lately. So, to help you respond to your teen’s vaping questions, and to help you have an open dialogue with your teen about the topic, here are some things you should know.

When your teen uses vapes, it can be a tough conversation to have. However, talking to them about vaping is important to protect them and to make sure they understand the dangers of using vapes. Here are some ways to make the conversation easier and to help your teen understand that vaping can become an addiction.

  1. Talk about smoking and vaping options. As more teens try vaping, it is important to talk to your kids about the risks involved. Start by making sure they know which vaping products are safe and which are toxic.
  2. Explain why underage vaping is risky. Vaping is becoming more and more popular with young adults. Unfortunately, vaping can also lead to addiction. But some parents feel vaping is harmless, stating that teens are just looking for an effortless way to get high. But the truth is, vaping can be harmful to both your heart and lungs.
  3. Explain how vaping is different from smoking. Vaping has become a popular alternative to smoking. Most people who vape do so without the intention or desire to quit smoking. In fact, vaping has quickly become popular among teenagers. So, what is it about vaping that makes it so appealing? For starters, it is far less harmful than smoking, and because it is inhaled, the effects are almost immediate.
  4. Tell your teen that vaping is addictive. Although vaping is safer than smoking cigarettes, it still contains nicotine and is still addictive. Help your teen understand the dangers of vaping by letting them know that vaping is addictive.
  5. Explain the harms of smoking and vaping. Vaping has become increasingly popular among those who enjoy the sensation, and it has also been embraced by many who see it as a healthy alternative to tobacco cigarettes. Teens, in particular, are attracted to vaping. But, like any other type of substance, vaping comes with its own set of risks. Tobacco cigarettes and vaping both contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can negatively affect brain development.
  6. Talk about the dangers of nicotine. As parents, we feel responsible for keeping our kids safe. We want them to make good choices and avoid any potentially dangerous situations. One of the most dangerous situations a teen can find themselves in is smoking. Smoking can lead to future health problems and even death. However, it is extremely difficult for a non-smoker to understand why teens turn to smoke.
  7. Stress that it is normal to try to stop vaping. Stressing that vaping can become an addiction is one of the most effective ways to help your teen understand that vaping can become an addiction. There is a myriad of stresses and feelings that teens feel while they are trying to overcome this addiction. This goes for the parents, too.
  8. Explain that quitting vaping is hard. Vaping enters our teens’ lives at an incredibly vulnerable time—their prefrontal cortex does not have fully developed, so they are more inclined to experiment than their parents ever were. Because of this, vaping can be an easier habit to transition to than cigarettes. Yet it is also far more difficult to quit. Because vaping is far more discreet, teens who struggle with addiction are less likely to confess their vaping habit and are more likely to suffer in silence.
  9. Tell your teen that it is not too late to quit. Vaping is a hot topic these days, and parents are worried about what their kids are doing. To help your teen understand that vaping can become an addiction, talk to them about the facts, and help them understand that it is not too late to quit.
  10. Tell your teen they will be okay. Vaping has become an increasingly popular activity among teenagers. Teens use the devices to inhale flavored liquids, sometimes known as vape juice or e-juice. Vaping is an alternative to smoking, and teens are doing it more and more when it is easily available to them. Unfortunately, more and more teens are becoming addicted to vaping, and it is taking a serious toll on their health, including brain development. That is why it is important to talk openly with your teen about the dangers of vaping, so they will be aware of the risks.

Parents want to encourage their teens to quit smoking. However, vaping seems to be causing more harm than smoking, so parents should discourage their teens from vaping. Teens who vape are more likely to become addicted to nicotine and more likely to start smoking. Teens who start smoking are at an increased risk of developing health issues.
